Michigan best-selling authors donation helps protect Michigan waters Best-selling authors, Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick put their bustling book business on hold this week to hand-print 400 t-shirts. They will donate the shirts to help protect pristine streams and groundwater in the unspoiled Yellow Dog plains from proposed sulfide mining that could permanently desecrate the environment and harm area wildlife. The logos, designed by Michigan wildlife artist Heiner Hertling, are meticulously applied one-by-one to t-shirts. The shirts will be sold to raise money for the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve which monitors proposed underground mining operations and other changes to landscape that could imperil streams like the Yellow Dog and the Salmon Trout in Michigans upper peninsula. Sulfide mining extracts minerals embedded in sulfide ores, which create sulfuric acid after they are brought to the surface and come in contact with air and water. If not properly contained, the acid from the ore could destroy living organisms in the streams and contaminate groundwater . " Our Waters, Our Legacy, Our Responsibility thats the message were putting on the back of the shirts and whats really important," said Sams. "The Salmon Trout River up in the Yellow Dog watershed is one of only places in the Upper Peninsula where the coaster brook trout spawn. Its our responsibility to protect the habitat for them and for future generations." "Carl and Jeannie have been such great supporters of our efforts because they truly love the land and waters of Michigan and especially those of the Upper Peninsula. Their work captures the essence and aroma of wild, wilderness areas and its creatures. All who purchase these shirts will be wearing the love we all have for our Great Lakes and our wild places of Michigan," says Cynthia Pryor, Executive Director of the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve. To purchase a t-shirt, please send a check for $18.00 (includes shipping) to: Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve, Inc, Carl's Shirts, P.O. Box 5, Big Bay, MI 49808. All proceeds go to help stop Sulfide Mining on the Yellow Dog Plains. Sams and Stoick, who live in Milford, often use their books and wildlife photography to teach lessons of nature. "Lost in the Woods", their newest childrens book, tells the story of a fawn who the furry and feathered friends of the forest think is lost. They soon discover that hes not really lost or abandoned, but is alone by natures design. Newborn fawns spend much of the first weeks of their lives without mom because her scent could attract predators to her babe. She instinctively knows to stay only briefly to nurse and care for her fawn. He will travel with her when he is older and stronger.
