Couple donates books to every public

March is Reading Month
Elementary school libraries in Michigan from Ironwood to Monroe 3,072 in all will get copies of Lost in the Woods, the New York Times best-selling childrens book by Michigan authors Carl R. The couple is partnering with Senator Jason Allen (Traverse City) to provide copies of their book to public elementary schools throughout the state in celebration of March is Reading Month. One of our goals with this book was to make sure that every Michigan elementary school receives a copy, Sams said. Thanks to Senator Allen and his colleagues, weve found a way to make sure that gets accomplished.
Through Lost in the Woods, Carl and Jean hope people will learn that most often fawns found alone in the woods are not lost or abandoned. The mother doe instinctively knows her scent could attract predators and that she can only stay briefly to nurse and care for him. Fawns are born without a scent. They use their spots to help camouflage themselves until their legs are strong enough to keep up with mother doe and run from danger.
I am grateful for the efforts of Carl Sams and Jean Stoick to help promote the importance of literacy, Allen said. Reading is the key to success in school and life. We need to teach our children early in life that in addition to being fun, reading is the key to open any door.

Thanks to the generosity of Carl and Jean, every child in a Michigan elementary school will have an opportunity to enjoy this beautiful book, Allen said. Were fortunate to have such talented authors call Michigan their home.
The whole point of March is Reading Month is to encourage our children to read, read, read, says Ms. Jeanne Must, a teacher in early intervention with West Bloomfield schools. Lost in the Woods, so colorfully written and magnificently illustrated, increases the young childs awareness of the wonder of nature, and inspires his responsibility to take care of it.

Teachers and librarians have been incredibly supportive of both of our books, said Stoick. We even had curriculum guides developed for use in the classroom.
Sams and Stoick are also the authors of Stranger in the Woods, which has been on the New York Times best-seller list for five consecutive years, hitting the number one spot on the list in December of 2002. Their Stranger in the Woods book, movie and soundtrack combined have earned 27 national and international awards.
The husband and wife team, both Michigan natives, have been photographing wildlife for more than 20 years. Their work has appeared in publications such as National Geographic, Audubon, BBC Wildlife of Great Britain, National Wildlife and Birders World.
