Keweenaw Bay Indian Community member Charlotte Loonsfoot received a 30-day delay of sentence on a misdemeanor trespass charge involving a May protest of the Kennecott Eagle Minerals Company at Eagle Rock near the Yellow Dog River.

I learned about this from the blog, Stand for the Land.

Loonsfoot pleaded no contest to the charge and if she abides by all terms of the 30-day delay, the prosecution will dismiss the charge.

In the article, Loonsfoot said she plans to run for a seat on the tribal council. She said she thinks the council could be doing more to try to stop the mine, located on treaty lands.

“And they’re not,” Loonsfoot said.

Learn more in the article,” Tribal mine protester gets delay of sentence“, in The Mining Journal.

It will be interesting to see what plays out. I’d love to see the mine stopped. What about you?

Do you know that the Eastern United States has wild horses? The Outer Banks’ wild horses, some of the last wild horses in the Eastern United States, live on a stretch of barrier island.

A boom in vacation homes in the past 25 years in this remote place has seen the mustangs confined to a 7,500-acre sanctuary on the northern tip of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. And now the herd itself may shrink along with its habitat, according to the article, “Outer Banks’ wild horses losing battle with development for space“.

“The American wild horse is disappearing from our country,” said Karen McCalpin, executive director of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, a nonprofit group that manages the herd. “To me, they’re as much a symbol of freedom as the bald eagle.”

“The county says there are 3,195 developable lots up there,” said Mike Hoff, manager of the Currituck refuge. “At that point, what habitat is left?”

According to the World Wildlife Fund website, the Multinational Species Conservation Funds Semipostal Stamp Act directs the U.S. Postal Service to offer a premium-priced stamp above the standard first-class rate and dedicates the additional revenue raised to wildlife conservation projects. The legislation does not affect the cost of a regular first-class stamp; an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office found that the bill would pose no cost to taxpayers.

“This legislation will make it easy for any American to make a real impact in protecting tigers, elephants, rhinos and many other threatened and endangered species by simply visiting their nearest post office,” said Ginette Hemley , WWF’s senior vice president for Conservation Strategy and Science.

Have you ever heard of forest bathing? I hadn’t either until I read about it in The New York Times, “The Claim: Exposure to Plants and Parks Can Boost Immunity“.

In a series of studies, scientists found that people who spend time in nature with plenty of trees experience increased immune function. It makes perfect sense to me as I find walking in the woods with my dog to be one of the best ways to relax and relieve stress.

According to the article, stress reduction is one factor. But scientists also chalk it up to phytoncides, the airborne chemicals that plants emit to protect them from rotting and insects and which also seem to benefit humans.

Visiting nature parks for therapeutic effect has become a popular practice called “Shinrin-yoku,” or “forest bathing” in Japan. Learn more.

A massive urban wildlife study of the Chicago region will be launched by scientists at the Lincoln Park Zoo. I found this timely as just this morning my next door neighbors live trapped a woodchuck that’s been eating their flowers and scaring their cat.

About the Massive Urban Wildlife Study
After reading the article “Scientists to Launch Massive Urban Wildlife Study” on WBEZ.org Chicago Public Radio, I learned that researchers are putting cameras at more than 100 sites in the Chicago region. The idea is to track how and where animals move in urban areas, and use this data to influence city planning.

It sounds good to me and sounds great for the preservation of urban wildlife.
