Chickadees in winter are fun to watch. We tend to assume they are warm and comfortable.

I found this informative article, “Chickadees in winter” from OregonLive.com, that makes the point that chickadees are struggling to survive during winter.

The article states that chickadees lack the heavier feathering of other wintering birds and are more susceptible to severe weather in the most temperate winter range they can find. If a heavy wind lifts their outer feathers, it can chill bare skin and steal metabolic energy. It’s a good read.
