K Weston used to be a wildlife rehabilitator. She let us photograph orphaned fawns for our award-winning book, Lost in the Woods. In fact, the fawn on the cover of the book was actually attacked by a dog and K nursed it back to health.

K is a retired teacher who used to raise and release orphaned fawns every year, using her own money, caring for up to 21 fawns at one time. She fed them, gave them veterinary care and cared for them until they were strong enough to go back into the wild.

K is a very special lady. Carl and Jean LOVE their new walking sticks! Thank you K!

I found this timely article, “‘Abandoned’ baby animals should probably be left alone“, and want to share it with you.

This excellent article starts with the sentence, “Sometimes the best of intentions have the worst of outcomes.” This is so true. Many times well-intentioned people attempt to ‘rescue’ fawns and other young wildlife and do more harm than good.

Lisa Fischer has seen it countless times, according to the article. Lisa heads up the Suburban Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Inc. But what to many is an abandoned animal is to her an animal that probably should have been left where it was. Just last month Lisa received two fawns, with two very different outcomes. View the rest of the article.

Lost in the Woods
To help children learn that it’s okay to leave fawns and other young wildlife alone that they find in the woods, have your child read our best-selling children’s book, Lost in the Woods. Carl and Jean’s book weaves a delightful tale with a message: fawns found alone in the woods are rarely lost or abandoned.

This time of the year you may see what you think are orphaned fawns. They may not be Lost in the Woods!

Did you know that newborn fawns spend their first weeks without mom because her scent will attract predators to her babe? She instinctively knows to stay only briefly to nurse and care for her fawn. He will travel with her when he is older and stronger.

Your children can learn this important nature lesson in our best-selling children’s book, Lost in the Woods. “The little book is a chunk of pure magic …”: That’s what The Detroit News wrote in a review of Lost in the Woods.

Well-meaning people often think they’re saving a fawn when they find them alone and take them home to try to care for them. “Thousands of fawns are lost each year when people take them from the woods thinking they’re lost or abandoned,” says Carl R. Sams II. “Actually, since they are born scentless, the camouflaging spots and being alone are what keep them safe.”

If you find a fawn alone in the woods, please leave it be. In most cases, it is not lost. It is doing what nature intended – hiding from predators until its mother returns.

Leave fawns alone so that the mother doe has a chance to return.

With even the best professional care possible, the survival rate of rehabilitated fawns and many other animals is very low, according to the informative article, “If You Find a Fawn, Leave it Alone“, from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Leave fawns alone. Good advice for all of us who care about wildlife.
