Walking stick features a pileated woodpecker, the star of our book, Tea with Lady Sapphire: Sharing the Love of Birds.

K Weston used to be a wildlife rehabilitator. She let us photograph orphaned fawns for our award-winning book, Lost in the Woods. In fact, the fawn on the cover of the book was actually attacked by a dog and K nursed it back to health.

K is a retired teacher who used to raise and release orphaned fawns every year, using her own money, caring for up to 21 fawns at one time. She fed them, gave them veterinary care and cared for them until they were strong enough to go back into the wild.

K is a very special lady. Carl and Jean LOVE their new walking sticks! Thank you K!

It’s okay to leave fawns alone that you find alone in the woods. That’s the lesson in our best-selling children’s book Lost in the Woods. While a fawn found alone in the woods may seem vulnerable, they are rarely lost.

If you find a fawn alone in the woods, please leave it be. In most cases, it is not lost. It is doing what nature intended – hiding from predators until its mother returns.

Leave fawns alone so that the mother doe has a chance to return.

With even the best professional care possible, the survival rate of rehabilitated fawns and many other animals is very low, according to the informative article, “If You Find a Fawn, Leave it Alone“, from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
