Caroline Daisy and Lainey Marie, along with their mother and grandmother, visited our studio today.

The visit from our littlest nature lovers turned a mundane day into one the entire staff thoroughly enjoyed.

“Caroline and Lainey memorized our books and movies word for word! They are our two biggest fans,” says Carl R. Sams II.

Carl spent the day with Daisy and Lainey reading books, feeding birds, taking pictures and playing in the woods. Kids and nature, they really do go together.

Book review editor J T Cooper reviewed our new board book When Snowflakes Fall. He gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

J T’s Children’s Book Review
“A great book for ages 2 to 5 about what happens when snow falls in the woods.” August 9, 2009

“This excellent book tells a child what the animals do when snow starts falling in the woods. It describes how each animal family gets ready for the winter and the snow that follows.

Most of the birds and animals were photographed near the authors’ home in a nature preserve. It teaches a small child about nature and how each of these creatures prepares for winter and a snowy environment.

From the owl and chipmunk and others, it tells what each does. The photography is, as usual, fantastic.”

Thank you JT for the nice review.

According to the article, for years Lorrie McNeill loved teaching “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the Harper Lee classic that many Americans regard as a literary rite of passage.

But last fall, for the first time in 15 years, Ms. McNeill, 42, did not assign “Mockingbird” — or any novel. Instead she turned over all the decisions about which books to read to the students in her seventh- and eighth-grade English classes at Jonesboro Middle School in this south Atlanta suburb.

“I feel like almost every kid in my classroom is engaged in a novel that they’re actually interacting with,” Ms. McNeill said, several months into her experiment. “Whereas when I do ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,” I know that I have some kids that just don’t get into it.” View the article.

The article from ABC News, “Reading to Dogs Helps Kids Build Literacy Skills“, is about how dogs are helping children learn to read. According to the article, Theo, a 5-year-old border collie-greyhound mix, might just be a young reader’s best friend.

That’s because Theo, like more than 2,300 dogs around the country, has been trained to do what many humans cannot: listen, with seemingly unlimited patience, as his young friends read out loud.

“I like to read stories with him,” said 8-year-old Brian Chan, who reads with Theo at a branch of the New York Public Library. “He does look at the story book, and he smiles a lot.” More information.
