Development of the largest natural gas fields in the United States is driving wildlife from traditional wintering grounds according to the story,”Wildlife losing habitat to U.S. gas fields

Researchers found an 82 percent decline of lands classified as “highest quality” that animals use in winter. Natural gas development needs infrastructure such as roads, pads, and more and these are driving pronghorn antelope to the edges.

Do you own land that you love? Do you want to protect nature and wildlife? Are you aware there are ways you can permanently conserve your land that offer tax benefits?

Jean Stell, a critically acclaimed pianist, permanently protected her 78-acre Ashland County, Ohio property through the Western Reserve Conservancy.

Stell’s vacation property has forests, a 10-acre lake and more than 115 plant and tree species. “I wanted a place where the animals can live and the green space is preserved. That is important to me,” she said in her inspiring story.

Unplug your kids, get them outdoors

Unplug your kids! Are you an unplugged mom? This article in The Christian Science Monitor, “Five tips to unplug your kids, get them out into nature“, is a great way to get your kids unplugged.

Here’s the first tip:

1. Native Nature Scavenger Hunt: Wherever you live, something is “native” to that area. Many of the native animal and plant species that used to thrive in a given area, may be hiding “in plain sight” or in fact becoming extinct.

Manicured lawns in the suburbs and gentrified city parks often use what “looks” pretty, but may not be native to that region. Take out a book at the local library on local plants and animals and explore your yard or park with the kids in our life and find and identify five species native to your area!

Read the rest of the tips at “Five tips to unplug your kids, get them out into nature“. Another way to connect your children with nature is with our award-winning children’s books.

Prince William: ‘Wildlife poaching in Africa must stop’

In the article, “Prince William: ‘Wildlife poaching in Africa must stop’“, Prince William, in a passionate speech, urges people to get involved and spread the word to support conservation and help end poaching.

“We must act now, coherently and together, if the situation is to be reversed and our legacy – our global, natural legacy – preserved. Tomorrow will be too late.”

“I would just ask one thing of you: spread the word about the work of Tusk and other organisations engaged in this battle to preserve Africa’s unique natural heritage.”

Prince William and Kate were attending the UK premire of the movie African Cats, in aid of Tusk.

Prince William is right on as he speaks of the urgency required to save rhinos, elephants, and other majesctic African wildlife…and we can help. Visit Tusk to get started.

The Big Year: What did you think of this movie?

the big yearI finally watched The Big Year, and loved it! It did not get rave reviews, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

Jack Black plays an enthusiastic birder, unhappy in his day job. Steve Martin is great, as always. And Owen Wilson plays a bit of an overconfident birder who has mixed values as to what’s truely important in life.

I think if you love the outdoors, and/or birds, you will love this movie. The movie features many beautiful places and a variety of birds.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

For great insight on the movie, read “Birds, Birders, and Birding in The Big Year: What We Noticed” from “Round Robin”, a blog from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
