Orphaned bear cubs released in Sierra National Forest

Two orphaned bear cubs were released in the Sierra National Forest by the California Department of Fish and Game. Hikers found the 6-month cubs last summer after their mother was illegally killed by a poacher.

Bear snaring proposed for Alaska: Former governor calls it a “train wreck”

The use of snares to kill bears is a “train wreck” of wildlife management policy, former Alaska governor Tony Knowles said as he announced he was joining biologists in opposing the expansion of such methods, according to the article “Ex-Alaska governor Knowles, former biologists to oppose snaring of bears to help moose numbers“.

The former governor said he planned to testify today against proposals to expand the use of snares to kill bears so that more moose would be available to hunters.

“This is nuts where we’re going. This is a real train wreck that’s going to happen in terms of our wildlife management policies. That’s why I wanted to get involved in it,” the former governor said in the article.

I personally feel that snaring is a very cruel and thoughtless idea.

What is the answer to stay safe from grizzly bear attacks while still enjoying nature and respecting these beautiful bears? The recent rash of grizzly bear attacks in the news has me searching for answers.

In the article, ”Drought brings out aggression in hungry bears“, Mike Krueger, a wildlife biologist with Texas Parks & Wildlife, says a lack of rain means less natural food sources in the woods, causing bears to travel to towns seeking food in garbage. Second-home development has filled in many private lands that surround remote tracts of federal land, according to the article “Grizzly bear encounters are raising hackles“. This means that bears have more opportunity to encounter people.

Bears and humans: Encounters on the rise

Bear and human run-ins are on the rise.

Imagine walking into your kitchen and seeing a bear! That’s what happened in Colorado to Griffin W. Smith, a college student home last week who came downstairs for breakfast to discover a black bear eating from the dog’s dish. You can read the article, “Human Run-Ins With Bears May Portend Deeper Changes” in The New York Times.

According to the article, drought, longer term climate change, and more people recreating and living in wildlife areas are causing the encounters. People can make things worse. Last month, according to the article, two people were seen buying cheeseburgers and hand-feeding them to bears near a Burger King in western Colorado. State wildlife officials said that act endangered both local residents and the bears, by cementing a message to the animals that people are a food source.

“The overriding thing is that there’s more and more people all the time and they’re moving into the outskirts of the wilderness and more and more people are recreating, and at the same time we’ve been managing bears to keep them from disappearing,” said Lance Craighead, executive director of the Craighead Institute, a scientific research group in Montana that has focused on bears. “So there’s bound to be more incidents.”

Black bear roaming through New Jersey suburb is lovesick

A black bear in New Jersey is looking for love. The animal probably could use a dating service more than he needed the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife, according to the cute article, “Bear found roaming through NJ suburbs is more lovesick than homesick“.

State officials said the 3-year-old male has been captured six times in the past 18 months, and they suspect that the bear isn’t looking for food, or trouble, as much as he is seeking a female companion.

“Part of the situation with him is there are no females,” said Kim Tinnes, a wildlife services technician for the state Department of Fish & Wildlife, who has participated in capturing the same bear the past three times. “Since (bears) live to breed, and there’s nobody, he’ll keep working, until he finds a female.

Steve Searles is The Bear Whisperer and he is back on Animal Planet! I watched The Bear Whisperer on TV last year and blogged about it (“Bear whisperer” helps Mammoth Lakes cope with widlife).

It was one of the best shows about bears I’ve seen! I’m happy the show, Bear Whisperer Returns, will be on Animal Planet this month. Watch the short video below as Steve Searles rescues a bear cub as the cub’s mother watches close by.
