Jane Goodall will deliver a speech, “Making a Difference Everyday with Jane Goodall,” at Central Michigan University on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 8pm. Learn more in the article, “Jane Goodall to speak on campus in March for more than $60,000“.

Dr. Goodall will be giving a keynote speech about her experiences with the Gombe chimpanzees. She will also be talking about the Jane Goodall Institute and its continued research into chimpanzees and efforts to protect and preserve their habitats.

The event is free but tickets are needed and seating is reserved. Please call 989-774-3000 or 888-268-0111 (Mon – Fri 8am-5pm), stop by the Box Office, or visit Central Michigan University’s Box Office Ticket Central (scroll down once on page) to order your tickets.

Our good friend Bruce, his grandkids Olivia and Madison, and their friend Emerson, visited us last week and played with our cat, Mr. Tut. As you may know, Mr. Tut is featured in our book, Tea with Lady Sapphire: Sharing the Love of Birds.

We all had fun (Mr. Tut had the most fun as he just LOVED being petted with that red grooming glove) and it was a delightful kick off to the holidays! Thank you Bruce for bringing in these wonderful, very polite and talented children.

This past weekend was a happy one for some little children. Their holiday was made brighter by Carl and Jean’s donation of 1,000 of our 7″ plush snowman.

On Saturday Carl and Jean donated the stuffed toy snowmen (see photo below) to the Revival Tabernacle church in Highland Park, Michigan. This was arranged by Becky, our wonderful office manager, who, along with her family, drove the snowmen to the church.

Becky helped pass out snowmen and has wonderful memories of nice people and happy children.

Carl and Jean’s book signing at Dow Gardens in Midland, Michigan last Friday night was a huge hit!

Thanks to the outreach efforts of Michelle, Elizabeth and others at Dow Gardens, and help from the media, including the wonderful David Nicholas at WCMU Public Radio, and the great folks at the Midland Daily News, Bay City Times, and WMPX (radio), and others (I’m certain I missed some), many people showed up to buy books and have books signed.

The fact that Carl is a graduate of Siebert Elementary School in Midland was a huge draw. Carl and Jean greatly enjoyed seeing many old friends, and making some new ones too!

The Birdfeeder and Clarkston Flower Shoppe in Clarkston, Michigan, one of our new dealers, is hosting Carl and Jean from noon to 4pm this Sunday, December 18 for a book signing during the store’s Toys for Tots benefit. Here’s a chance for you to see Carl and Jean locally, purchase our children’s picture books (Carl and Jean will autograph them for you, and personalize them too!), and donate a toy to a child to make their Christmas bright.

The Birdfeeder and Clarkston Flower Shoppe is collecting new unwrapped children’s toys now through the big event on December 18th.

Children are asked to bring an unwrapped toy to fill up Santa’s sleigh with donations for Toys for Tots of Oakland County. A photographer will be on site taking photos of children with Santa and his reindeer free of charge with every donation.

A quick update on Dakota the owl (click image above to enlarge) for those of you following his progress. According to the Wisconsin Wildlife Neighbors blog, he is coming along and is eating solid foods for the first time, although his condition is guarded.

Dakota lost 27% of his body weight during the three weeks he was missing, so I imagine it will take some time for him to recover fully. Keep up to date on Dakota’ progress by visiting the Wildlife In Need Center’s Facebook page.

Birds, nature and the relationship between a grandma and her grandchildren are the theme of Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick’s new children’s book, Tea with Lady Sapphire: Sharing the Love of Birds. Carl and Jean will be signing their books from 4:00pm to 7:00pm during Silent Nights at Dow Gardens in Midland, Michigan on Friday, December 16. Carl is a graduate of Siebert Elementary School in Midland. 

“We are very excited to share our new book, Tea with Lady Sapphire: Sharing the Love of Birds, during Dow Garden’s Silent Nights. Nature lovers will want to share this one with the special children in their lives,” Jean explains. “Many of the pictures were taken from our home in the Huron Mountains.”

Dow Garden’s Silent Nights take place from 5:00pm to 7:30pm on Friday, December 16 & Saturday, December 17. The walk features luminary-lined paths, illuminated trees and bridges, and a musical group in the festive Conservatory. There is no charge for this annual event; it is a gift to the community.

Dow Gardens (www.dowgardens.org) is located at 1809 Eastman Avenue and carries our line of books. Carl and Jean hope to see you there!
