U.S. Gulf Coast wildlife is in the path of a giant oil slick. Sadly, last week’s offshore drilling accident in the Gulf of Mexico could be one of our largest environmental disasters.

The following are some national parks and wildlife refuges in the path of the spill, which threatens the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, from the article “U.S. Gulf Coast wildlife in path of oilspill” in Reuters.com:

  • Pass-A-Loutre Wildlife Management Area – Louisiana
  • Brenton National Wildlife Refuge – Louisiana
  • Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge – Mississippi
  • Gulf Islands National Seashore National Park – Mississippi/Florida
  • Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge – Mississippi/Alabama
  • Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge – Alabama
More than 370 species of birds migrate through the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, including ospreys and herons, also home to seven species of hummingbirds and animals like the red fox and coyote.
