An environmental group is asking federal wildlife officials to set aside habitat in Southern California for the endangered jaguar, according to the article “An environmental group wants to bring jaguars back to Southern California and the West” in The Press-Enterprise.

As stated in the article, researchers with the Center for Biological Diversity unearthed field notes of interviews with Native Americans who recalled that the tu’kwut — a large cat with yellow-brown skin and spots — was well known in the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains.

The group submitted a proposal to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Servic to designate 53 million acres in Arizona and New Mexico and smaller, unspecified areas in Texas and Southern California to help the species recover.

They are a beautiful animal. It will be interesting to see what transpires. What do you think?
